"The plant shut down in, I believe, 1998 (though I might be off by a year in either direction--I've seen it listed as both '98 and '99). They used to manufacture automobile brake linings, and the site (as well as the surrounding area) is contaminated with PCBs and other nasty chemicals (it is a superfund site, according to what I've read about it)."
