Someone sent ABNF an e-mail stating this abandoned highway was a place for animals to cross and never was an actual road or bridge at all.

It's not abandon, but built that way for the WATCHUNG RESERVATION park I-78 was built through. It lets animals and hikers cross. In the google sat pics attached you see it's much too wide for a road and no road lead to it.
